Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 2026

This policy explains what personal information Devgun Family Law collects through our website (www.devgunlawoffice.com) and our consultation page (help.devgunlawoffice.com), why we collect it, who else handles it, and how to reach us about it. It applies while you are browsing our websites or asking whether we can help you. Once we agree to act for you, our retainer agreement and our duty of confidentiality as lawyers also govern how we handle your information.

We follow Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

What we collect when you contact us

Our enquiry forms ask for:

  • your full legal name and any other names you have used
  • your email address and phone number
  • the type of law your enquiry is about (family law, wills and estates, or real estate) and, for family law, the type of matter
  • the other party's name and their lawyer, if you know them
  • whether you have a court date or other deadline coming up, and the date if you know it
  • for family law, whether it is safe for us to leave you a voicemail or send you an email
  • your message
  • your agreement to be contacted about your enquiry

Some questions only appear for some types of law. If you phone or email us instead, we collect what you choose to tell us.

The forms also tell us how you found us. If you arrived through one of our Google ads or a link carrying campaign details, the form sends us the ad click identifier, the campaign name and source, and the first page you visited. On our main website, the form keeps these details in your browser until you close the tab and sends them to us only if you submit it.

Our consultation page includes the internet (IP) address a form was sent from in the email we receive, to help us spot misuse. Our main website keeps the IP address and the reason for any blocked spam submission for 14 days.

Why we ask about the other party

Lawyers have strict duties to avoid conflicts of interest. Before we hear the details of your situation, we check whether we act, or have acted, for someone on the other side. That is why the form asks for the other party's name and their lawyer, and why we ask you to keep your first message brief.

Please do not send detailed or confidential information until we have confirmed that we can help you.

We collect the other party's name from you, not from them. We use it only to run the conflict check and, if we act for you, to manage your file.

Why we ask whether it is safe to contact you

Some people contact us while they are still living with the person they are separating from. Our family law form asks how we can safely reach you: by voicemail and email, by email only, by phone call with no voicemail, or by text only. We will use the method you choose when we reply. We cannot control who else can see your phone or email, so please choose a method only you can reach. We use your answer only to decide how to contact you.

How we use your information

We use the information you give us to:

  • respond to your enquiry and arrange a consultation
  • check for conflicts of interest
  • decide whether we can act for you and, if we do, open your file
  • keep the records our professional obligations require
  • see which of our ads and pages lead people to contact us
  • keep our forms free of spam and our websites secure

We do not sell or rent personal information.

Cookies, analytics and advertising

Our contact form uses one cookie of its own: a security cookie that protects the form against forged submissions. It is deleted when you close your browser, and the form cannot be sent without it.

Our websites use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to understand how people use them. Google Analytics records the pages you view (including any campaign details in the link you followed), how you arrived (for example from a search, one of our ads or another website), the type of device and browser you use, and your approximate location, such as your city. It also records when you tap our phone number or email address and when you finish sending an enquiry. It does not receive the contents of our forms. Google estimates your location from your IP address; Google says Analytics does not store the address itself.

Google Analytics sets cookies named _ga and _ga_ECKVXEF2XQ to recognize a browser that comes back. By default they last up to two years.

Our Google Analytics account is linked to our Google Ads account so that we can see which ads lead to enquiries. Google handles this information under its own privacy policy, and you can read how Google uses information from websites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

On our main website, a short notice at the bottom of the page tells you that we use Google Analytics to understand how people use the website. Google Analytics uses cookies to measure how the website is used. Google's advertising features are switched off on our main website, so a visit to www.devgunlawoffice.com is not used to show you our ads on other websites. When you click OK on the notice, we save a cookie named devgun_notice in your browser. It only remembers that you clicked OK, and it lasts up to 12 months. Some browsers, such as Safari, keep it for a shorter time, so you may see the notice again.

Our consultation page, help.devgunlawoffice.com, uses the same Google Analytics set-up and does not show this notice. We do not use visits to our consultation page to show you our ads on other websites.

Our consultation page also loads its fonts from Google's servers, so your browser sends Google your IP address and browser details when the page loads.

You can control this in several ways:

  • block or delete cookies in your browser settings (our contact form still needs its security cookie)
  • on a desktop browser, install Google's opt-out add-on for Google Analytics: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
  • manage the ads Google shows you, and whether they are personalized, at myadcenter.google.com

Who else handles your information

We use these service providers to run our websites and receive your enquiries:

  • Amazon Web Services hosts our websites on servers in Canada.
  • Mailgun delivers form enquiries to our email.
  • Microsoft 365 hosts our email, where enquiries arrive.
  • Google provides Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics, Google Ads and the fonts on our consultation page. Google does not receive the contents of our forms.
  • Calendly runs the booking calendars on our lawyers' profile pages. If you book through one, Calendly collects your name, email address and the details you enter, and sends them to us.

Each provider handles information under its own terms and privacy policy. We may also disclose personal information where the law requires or allows it, for example to comply with a court order.

Service providers outside Canada

This section is our written information about service providers outside Canada. Our Privacy Officer can give you a copy and answer questions about how these providers collect, use, disclose or store your information (contact details below).

  • Mailgun, in the United States, delivers your enquiry to our email.
  • Google, in the United States and the other countries listed at google.com/about/datacenters/locations, measures how our websites and ads perform, and supplies the fonts on our consultation page.
  • Microsoft may store or process our email in the United States.
  • Calendly, in the United States, runs our online booking calendars.

Information held in another country is subject to that country's laws, and its courts and authorities may be able to access it.

How long we keep it

Our websites do not keep a copy of your enquiry. The form sends it to us by email. Mailgun keeps delivery records, and briefly a copy of each message, for a limited period set by its service.

If we do not act for you, we keep your enquiry for one year. We keep the names from each enquiry, yours and the other party's, in our conflict records for as long as we need them to avoid conflicts of interest, which can be many years. If we act for you, your file is kept for the period our professional obligations require.

Our web servers also keep records of requests to our websites, including IP addresses, for a limited time to keep the websites secure and working.

How we protect it

Every page on our websites uses an encrypted connection. Enquiries are read by the staff who need them to reply and to run conflict checks. Our email provider and mail-delivery service handle them on the way to us. No way of sending information over the internet is completely secure, and ordinary email is not a secure way to send sensitive details. If you are unsure what to send, call us first.

Your choices and rights

Under PIPA you can ask us:

  • what personal information we hold about you, and how we have used or disclosed it
  • for a copy of that information
  • to correct information that is wrong or incomplete

Please make your request in writing to our Privacy Officer. We respond within 45 days, or within the longer time PIPA allows in some cases, and we will tell you if we need it. We may need to confirm your identity first. In a few cases the law allows or requires us to refuse a request, for example where the information is protected by solicitor-client privilege. If so, we will tell you why.

You can also withdraw your consent to our using your information, with reasonable notice. We may still keep what the law or our professional obligations require, such as our conflict records.
