A Prenuptial Agreement can be Romantic

No one gets married with the thought of getting divorced. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, that more often than not, a prenup is seen as unromantic, or worse, it presumes that the marriage will come to an end.

Another way to think about a prenup is like an insurance policy. For instance, no one envisions that their home may be engulfed in flames, but this does occur and things happen.

I look at a prenup as "relationship insurance".

What is a Prenuptial Agreement?

A prenup is a legally binding agreement between parties that outlines their financial circumstances at the time of marriage and specifies a protocol dealing with the division of certain family property in the event a marriage breaks down.

How will a Prenuptial Agreement help?

A prenup forces you to talk openly and honestly about your finances.

Research indicates that disagreements and/or arguments related to finances is among the leading factors concerning marriage breakdown.

A prenup prepared by an experienced lawyer can help prepare you and your spouse for a lifetime of financial responsibility and set reasonable financial expectations for you and your family. Discussing your future financial goals as a married couple will assist in planning for the future. For example, having children, how many children, buying a home, going travelling etc.

Understanding these goals and timelines will undoubtedly reduce surprises, stress and dissatisfaction within the marriage.

A prenup does not have to be a gloomy subject - in fact - it can pave the way to a healthy and happy marriage.
